MAC x Miley Cyrus Viva Glam Swatches & Review - Lipstick and Lipglass

MAC x Miley Cyrus Viva Glam

MAC announced that Miley Cyrus would be the Viva Glam spokesperson for 2015. Regardless of whether or not you're a Miley fan, it's hard to deny that she's the type of bold personality that can get people talking--which is exactly what the Vivia Glam campaigns need! If you're unfamiliar with MAC's Viva Glam campaign, I highly recommend reading about it on their site. In a nutshell, the campaign raises an incredibly amount of money that goes towards supporting individual (adults and children) affected by and living with HIV/AIDS.

Being the young, bold personality she is, Miley chose what MAC has described as "super-sexy hot pink" as her lipstick shade accompanied by "super-sexy hot pink with sparkling pearl shimmer) lipglass.

MAC x Miley Cyrus Viva Glam Lipstick & Lipglass Swatches

Sorry about the difference in skin tones below. The first shot with just the lipstick is more accurate to my actual skin tone, but with this weird winter weather and that blizzard (which is when I took these shots) the light has been changing constantly and it's making my camera super wacky.  The way google translates my images once I upload them makes them a bit odd as well. At least the lipstick shades are as accurate as I could capture even if it's making my skin look pale and oddly speckled in one pic!

MAC Miley Cyrus Viva Glam Lipstick Review

Shade - medium-deep hot pink with a slight salmon undertone
Finish - amplified (creamy and with a moderate shine)
Flavor/Scent - MAC's traditional vanilla
On the Lips - creamy, with plenty of slip; opaque coverage; very comfortable to wear
Price - $16 retail
Where to Buy - MAC/
My Thoughts - I'm a huge fan of MAC's amplified finish and you guys know I can't resist a good pink, so this lipstick was a total hit for me! I know I probably have a few colors that are similar, but I couldn't think of an exact dupe off the top of my head. The color is great, coverage is great and wear is comfortable. AND purchasing this lipstick benefits a great cause. Well done, MAC and Miley!

Tip: I love this over both More to Love liner and Cranberry liner (coming soon once again in the upcoming Penciled In collection) if you like a nice vibrant lip. You can also layer over Hip n' Happy if you want to subdue it a midge.

MAC Miley Cyrus Viva Glam Lipglass Review

Shade - medium deep jelly pink with multi-tonal pearl flecks
Finish - gloss with reflective specks
Flavor/Scent - MAC's traditional vanilla
On the Lips - MAC's typical lipglass formula; sticky; great shine; nice reflective specks
Price - $15 retail
Where to Buy - MAC/
My Thoughts - If you're like me and you don't mind a sticky gloss, this is a fun pink lipglass that complements Miley's lipstick well. It can also be worn on its own or over other colors. The multi-tonal pearl flecks give it added dimension, but the effect is moderately subtle overall and doesn't make you look as though you've doused your lips in glitter (in case that's not the type of effect you're looking for). I think it works well with Miley's Viva Glam mini collection and suggest giving it a try.

What do you think of Miley's Viva Glam lipstick and lipglass? Have you purchased either or both?

Marsala - Let's Talk Pantone's Color of the Year

Pantone's Color of the Year (from Pantone's site)

Pantone announced their Color of the Year not long ago and the beauty world has been buzzing since. I'm going to be honest, I've been on the fence with some past Pantone Color of the Year choices and this year is no exception.

Marsala isn't a "bad" color, it's just not something I'm personally drawn to. This reminds me a lot of the 90s, which was not my favorite beauty period. In fact, I'm fairly certain I had several lipsticks that were identical to the color in the image above from when I first started in beauty retail back in the 90s. I hate to say it, but I initially felt as though it was a kind of drab choice. Admittedly, I tend not to like many reds in general--mostly bright cool reds or neutral reds--so there's that. I also feel like some previous Pantone colors have been more flexible in terms of being able to easily incorporate them year-round. With Marsala, I feel like it's darker than what I'd normally choose for a spring or summer color. Not that it can't be worn year-round (I don't believe there are any "rules" when it comes to beauty since it's about self-expression and art), but for me personally, I like lighter colors in spring, vibrant colors in summer, then deeper colors in fall and winter. I'm sure the fact that I live in an area with 4 well-defined seasons is a factor.

Who knows? Maybe this will push me out of my normal preferences, especially if I have clients requesting it year-round. I just wanted to share my initial feelings on Marsala and see if anyone else is feeling the same.

What do you think? Are you excited for the year of Marsala or feeling a bit ambivalent?

I will definitely be looking for Marsala products that get me a bit more excited for this year's Color of the Year. If you have any recommendations let me know! I'd love to find some Marsala eye/lip/cheek product that change my mind.

MAC Studio Conceal & Correct Duo in Pale Yellow, Pale Pink Review & Swatches

MAC Studio Conceal & Correct Duo in Pale Yellow, Pale Pink

MAC Studio Conceal & Correct Duo in Pale Yellow, Pale Pink

MAC recently released a collection of products meant specifically for perfecting complexions. Included in this launch were these neat little conceal & correct duos, which I think seem best suited for undereye correction. They launched 4 duos--pale, medium, medium-deep and deep--which each include 2 blendable shades; a 1 blue/purple corrector (from pink all the way to orange) and 1 shade of yellow (from pale yellow all the way to ochre). I received the Pale duo, which includes a Pale Pink and Pale Yellow.

Note: Just a little color-theory tip! To neutralize a color, use the color opposite it on the color wheel.

I spent a few days testing this out on myself. While I would be better suited to the Medium concealer/corrector duo given the depth of my complexion, I was still able to get a reasonable idea of how the formula and shades function. I look forward to trying them on fairer complexions down the line as well.

MAC Studio Conceal & Correct Duo Pale Yellow, Pale Pink Review

Product Type - liquid corrector duo
Shades - pale pink, pale  yellow
Under the Eye - lightweight; blendable; light coverage; moderate dry time in very thin coats
Price - $25 retail
Where to Buy - MAC/
My Thoughts - For starters, I think the feel of this formula is fantastic! I hate super thick, dry formulas for delicate undereyes and this is lightweight, silky and very blendable. It dries down to a skin-like finish, not chalky matte--also a plus. The coverage is light and while you can apply multiple thin layers, I don't think you can achieve correction for super intense undereye pigmentation. The dry time on this formula is moderate when applied in thin layers, but should you apply more than a thin layer (which I don't personally recommend in general) it will not set very quickly. From the moment I first worked with this I could tell it had a reasonable amount of silicone in it, which I tend to prefer. There was only a small amount of creasing for me after a day of wear in the reasonably deep crease I have under each eye.

Overall, I think the formula itself has some great aspects such a the blendability, texture and finish. The small amount of creasing I experienced by applying super thin layers and allowing them to set between was great and I loved that it didn't get dry or cakey with wear. I like that I was able to mix the two colors to create a nice light salmon color and the packaging is compact. The coverage is light to maybe moderate if you build it up gradually, which may not be enough for those with fairly dark undereye circles. I need to get my hands on the other shades before I can fully determine just how effective these duos can really be on medium to deep complexions. For someone with a fairer complexion and lighter undereye circles, this Pale Yellow/Pale Pink duo may do the trick!

For reference, I am roughly an NC 25-30 depending on the time of year and I think the medium would probably best suit my complexion.

The question is: will I be adding these to my kit? I'll definitely have to try out a few of the deeper shades on some deeper complexions before I can make a final decision. They may be nicer for lighter correcting, so we'll see!

Have you tried any of MAC's new Conceal & Correct duos? What did you think?

Monat Rejuvenique Oil Intensive Review

Monat Rejuvenique Oil Intensive Review

Rejuvenique Oil Intensive is a multi-ingredient oil blend meant for skin and hair. According to the brand's site it offers the following:

  • "Nourish and energize the scalp with an invigorating blend of 11+ unique molecular ingredients –including vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, beta-carotene and omega-3 fatty acids – that mimic the body’s natural oils! The proprietary formula reduces hair thinning, prevents oxidative stress and adds incredible volume, repairing the hair with instantly visible, long-lasting shine without the damaging effects of silicone."

As many of you know, I am a HUGE fan of oil for skincare. I use it for my body, face and hair on a regular basis as part of my routines. Like many quality oil blends I've tried in the past, this can be used in hair, body and on the face.

This product comes in a 1 fl oz bottle and is priced at $99.

Limnanthes Alba (Meadowfoam) Seed Oil, Crambe Abyssinica Seed Oil, Camellia Oleifera Seed Oil, Solanum Lycopersicum (Tomato) Seed Oil, Daucus Carota Sativa (Carrot) Seed Oil, Citrus Limon (Lemon) Peel Oil, Citrus Aurantifolia (Lime) Oil, Citrus Aurantium Bergamia (Bergamot) Fruit Oil, Adansonia Digitata Oil, Mauritia Flexuosa Fruit Oil, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Gardenia Tahitensis Flower Extract, Moringa Oleifera Seed Oil, Caryocar Brasiliense Fruit Oil, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil

Where to Buy

This can be purchased directly through Monat's site.

My Thoughts

While I can't comment on some of the benefits Monat states this product offers, I can say that I found it to be as effective in regards to hydration as many oil mixes I've used. My skin was more hydrated and did not react (which is usually the case for my sensitive skin with oils) with use. I also liked using this on the ends of my hair post-showering--a regular part of my hair care routine. I found it kept my hair shinier and healthier feeling. Overall, fairly effective.

The price tag on this product is particularly high. I tried to find additional information on the brand's site regarding where ingredients were sourced, which I've found can often play a big part in the price tag on certain oils in addition to their general availability, and couldn't find anything specific. For this reason, I can't really say whether or not this oil mix is as effective as its heft price tag suggests. It may be, but I don't feel confident enough to say for certain I feel it is. I would recommend contacting the company directly and inquiring as to why the price tag is as high as it is prior to purchasing if it is something you'd like to know more about.

What do you think? Have you tried Rejuvenique Oil Intensive? What did you think of it?

2015 New Year's Resolutions

This holiday season has been a whirlwind and I'm both happy and sad to see it come to a close and a new year begin. I wanted to share some of my 2015 New Year's Resolutions with you as I do every year and would love to hear some of yours :)

Resolution 1: Health

Continue to work out 5x per week and continue to do my best to stay away from some of the sugary things I tend to overdo (my weakness!). I know it's incredibly cliche' to have a health resolution, but I tend to promise myself each year that I'll either restart or maintain this resolution. I'm happy to say that in 2014 I definitely stayed very close to my goal of working out 5x per week and eating well. I have arthritis in my upper back and if I'm not careful I end up with a lot of pain and find it difficult to move around as well. There were moments of weakness where I caved and didn't eat as well as I wish I had, but one day can't undo all the good days and you just have to keep moving forward! Overall, I'm proud of the way I stuck to my resolution in 2014 and plan to continue to do the same in 2015.

Resolution 2: Pursue My Dreams without Questioning Myself

I was fortunate enough in 2014 to be able to attend some truly amazing workshops that I know took my makeup artistry to a better level by firming up my foundation. I've been working for a very long time to become a better artist, but certain things over the years have delayed or discouraged me. Living in an area where the beauty industry is treated as almost a "second-class citizen" to many other industries here, it can be tough to get the things you need--education, supplies, etc. I don't want to ever let that stop me again! I want to push harder and continue to work towards building my makeup artistry business once again without allowing any doubts to get in my way.

Resolution 3: Don't Allow Other People's to Drama Distract Me

I'm not an overly sensitive person most of the time, but I do find it hard to brush off things people do when they're close to me. I feel like 2014 was full of a lot of other people's drama and some of it really brought me down. I don't want to be like that! I'm steering clear of people who are making unhealthy choices or bringing me down. I generally try to do this, but this year I'm sticking to my guns! If someone's negativity or bad choices are bringing you down, just take a break or limit how much you see them. Sometimes it's amazing how peaceful and focused you can become when you shed some of the negativity :)

Resolution 4: Focus on Myself

I don't mean focus on myself in a self-absorbed way, more of a don't look over at what the other person is doing and get discouraged to the point I lose focus. I think there's definitely a healthy level of competitiveness that can drive us to work harder and better towards our goals, but if we're so busy looking at where someone else is in any aspect of their lives and we lose focus on ours ... sometimes we achieve less. I want to keep it positive and keep moving forward no matter whether those around me are doing better or worse.

Resolution 5: Prioritize Carefully

I tend to be one of those people that takes on a lot and being a perfectionist, it stresses me out if EVERYTHING isn't done super well. I really want to prioritize the things I want to accomplish and focus on this year very carefully. I've been feeling for a while that although there are many benefits to maintaining my blog as much as I always have, that sometimes I don't love it as much as I used to. I'm 4 years in on January 4th and sometimes I feel as though it's starting to show when I think about reviewing items and I never want to post with less enthusiasm than when I started. I also find sometimes I sacrifice time with my 2 little guys in order to get reviews or launch info up by a certain time. As many of you know, my 2 little guys both face different challenges and I'm very actively involved in coordinating their education, therapies, medical things, etc. They're getting older and I can't sacrifice the energy I need to make sure I do my best at that (and just being a mom in general) in order to ensure I post Mon-Fri here. There were times over the last few years when my blog was "me time", but things have changed as my little guys have gotten older and their needs have shifted. It's such a critical time in their lives and I know we can get them to where they need to be if I put everything I can into what's going on with them now.

I'm not ready to let my blog go by any means because it has been an amazing outlet for me and it makes staying on top of the beauty industry much easier (a benefit when it comes to my makeup artistry), but I think 2015 will be more about reviewing or sharing techniques I'm super excited about and less about making sure I share a certain volume of posts each month. I understand some people want to check blogs several times a week or even daily and see new material and my blog may not be a great fit if this is what you prefer; but if you're still interested in hearing my opinions, seeing what products I'm most excited about, learning about makeup artistry projects I've been involved in, etc. please check in every so often!

Those are some of my biggest resolutions this year that I wanted to share :) I want to make 2015 GREAT! Tell me what some of your resolutions are for this year--I'm dying to know!

And just remind yourself, one bad day or one day of not sticking to your resolutions doesn't undo all the days you did stick to them. Pick yourself up, brush yourself off and start over again :)

Love you guys!
