MAI COUTURE Like a Diamond Trio Review & Swatches

Product Type

Like a Diamond Trio is a booklet of cosmetic sheets or "papier" that consists of 1 highlighting shade and 2 blushes. The booklet and sheets are slightly larger than a business card in size (3.9" x 2.6").

MAI COUTURE Crystal Cove Highlight Sheet

Shades

Like A Diamond Trio consists of 3 shades:
  • Crystal Cove highlight - shimmery champagne
  • Sunset Blvd blush - orange-leaning coral blush
  • Studio City blush - berry pink
L to R - Crystal Cove highlighter, Sunset Blvd blush, Studio City blush

These shades are layered within one compact booklet.

Application

Applying all 3 of these shades took a moment to get used to, but the concept is simple enough that it's quite easy once you get past the fact that you're using thin sheets of paper to apply your makeup! I tried several different techniques and found that gently buffing them into my skin in circular motions seemed to work best for the blushes. The highlighting shade transferred the easiest onto my skin and simply took gentle sweeps across my cheek bones. I also found patting this one on worked as well. Of the 2 blushes, Sunset Blvd was a bit more pigmented than Studio City, though both were decently pigmented. Makeup is technically only on one side of the sheet, though a tiny bit may transfer from the sheet behind it to its back.

On the Face

Crystal Cove highlighter was very shimmery, so depending on how much shimmer you want I suggest using a light hand and building it up. Sunset Blvd had amazing pigmentation, so I also suggest a light hand for this shade so that you can gradually build it up to the depth you want. Studio City took a few passes to build up its color on my complexion. On fairer complexions I don't think this would be required. It lends a subtle flush that is very natural in tone that I think many will find appealing if they prefer a more natural look.

Final Thoughts

I think these are incredibly convenient and I love that they're paraben- and talc-free. They're easily compact enough to fit into a small clutch! If you're regularly on the go and find yourself doing your makeup in a rush or on your way to or from places, these are a great option. If you have super sensitive skin, you may find that using these to apply your makeup daily exfoliates the top layer of your skin a bit too much if you have to rub rather than pat them on to achieve the pigmentation you want (rubbing anything including brushes or sponges exfoliates your skin a bit). The sheets easily tear out of the booklet, which is nice. I did find that a little bit of each product transferred onto my fingers when I used the sheets, but it wiped off easily. MAI COUTURE offers a number of different products and some of the one-product booklets are priced a bit lower than this 3-product booklet. All in all, I think the concept is fun and convenient!

I know my sisters would love products like this and I think they could make fun stocking stuffers or fabulous additions to gifts for bridesmaids. I'd love to try some of the other shades and makeup "papier" MAI COUTURE offers to see how they perform and will be sure to share if I do!

What do you think? Would you be willing to try applying your makeup with cosmetic sheets of paper?

    1. Hmmmmm could be interesting. I've done pigment and loose shadow splattered nails. These definitely require contact (and in some cases friction) to make them transfer the pigment ... if you try let me know!

  8. This is genius. At first I thought it was too pricey...but then I remember that I drop and destroy all of my MAC compacts halfway through anyway. At least this way I can use it all!

    1. Lol so funny. I've (knock on wood) never lost a compact to dropage, but I'd probably die if I did! $24 for 60 sheets is about $.40 per application so not too bad if you think about it that way :)
