lipstick queen vesuvius liquid lipstick review

Lipstick Queen Profile

You know those brands that hold a special place in your heart? Lipstick Queen is absolutely one of those for me. As a lipstick lover, how can you not appreciate an entire brand founded by a lovely someone that knows just how imperative a good lipstick is? Poppy King is one of my cosmetic heroes *sigh*. I've reviewed many Lipstick Queen lippies throughout the years so I recommend searching in the search bar if you're interested to see other swatches.

Lipstick Queen recently released their new Vesuvius liquid lipsticks--named after the infamous Mt. Vesuvius--and were kind enough to send a few over to me to share with you!

Lipstick Queen Vesuvius Liquid Lipstick Swatches & Review

Product Type

These are liquid lipsticks meant to be long-wearing, hydrating and pigmented.

Scent/Flavor

Like most products I've used that come in these types of tubes, my sensitive nose can detect the plastic of the packaging/brush. There is a slight peppermint scent and a lovely cool feel on the lips, but no real "flavor" per say.

Applicator

These come in a pen type applicator with a built in brush on one end. The brush is a tad stiff, especially initially, so I recommend flexing the bristles a bit prior to first use. To dispense product you twist the base of the wand. I found it took a good number of turns to get the pen started, but after that it came out easily. To avoid wasting product I suggest doing a bunch of quarter turns to start. I definitely recommend waiting a second or two between turns the first time as the first bit of product comes out at a slight delay.

Shades

These are currently available in 6 shades and I have 3 to share with you today.

lipstick queen vesuvius liquid lipstick bare swatch
Bare - light golden champagne shimmer

lipstick queen vesuvius liquid lipstick candy swatch
Candy - soft medium bubblegum pink

lipstick queen vesuvius liquid lipstick coral swatch
Coral - slightly orange-leaning vibrant red

On the Lips

These have an interesting consistency. They are slightly tacky until they dry down, but not as goopy and tacky as some glosses. I also found that the finish went from a high-gloss to a glossy-satin finish once they set. Bare was the least pigmented of the shades, which isn't surprising given it's color, followed by Candy and then Coral--which was the most pigmented. I found Bare and Candy required a little extra care to achieve even coverage with the built-in brush. Coral was the most pigmented and the easiest to apply. None were difficult to apply, but the 2 lighter shades did require a little extra smoothing out. I recommend pressing your lips together after application to achieve a super even coat.

These have a pleasantly cool, minty feel on the lips, though no discernible taste. They are hydrating and I didn't find them at all drying. As I've mentioned in the past, I've struggled quite a bit with feathering the last few years and I did get some slight feathering with Coral after extended wear. If this is an issue for you I strongly suggest creating a barrier with a clear lip pencil (many great brands offer them) to prevent feathering. If this isn't an issue for you in general you probably won't have this problem.

Final Thoughts

I am a sucker for pretty lip colors and I absolutely love that Lipstick Queen has created this line of liquid lipsticks. With the exception of Bare, these definitely distinguish themselves from glosses with their high pigmentation and unique glossy-satin finish--though I've always loved Lipstick Queen's glosses. Bare is actually very pretty, more so in person than I think it translates in picture, and I can see someone looking for this type of color/finish being drawn to it for a more unique nude lip. I think Candy is a super wearable pink. I know super light pinks and super bright pinks can be intimidating to those that don't often wear lighter colors, but I think this a perfect happy medium of vibrant, yet soft in tone. Coral is knock-your-socks-off vibrant and has such a beautiful color! While I wouldn't have categorized it as "coral" per say, it is definitely a really unique and lovely red in my opinion. I can see this one being super popular with those that prefer a bright, strong lip!

All in all I think these are a great addition to the extensive Lipstick Queen line and I look forward to eventually getting my hands on the 3 remaining colors--Fuchsia, Blush and Red.

Are you familiar with Lipstick Queen? Would you try any of these new Vesuvius liquid lipsticks?

Hot Pink Petals Valentine's Day Makeup Tutorial

Affiliate Links

Valentine's Day is coming so I wanted to make sure I got a couple Valentine's Day tutorials up as promised ahead of time! I shared a sneak peek of this tutorial a little while ago on instagram and I'm happy to say it's finally ready to share in its entirety with you today.

I used a bunch of Sugarpill shadows in here--some of my favorite brights! I highly, highly recommend Sugarpill. I've been a fan and customer for years and they never disappoint me. I think their loose and pressed shadows are equally fantastic and well-pigmented. Cannot wait for their upcoming Sparkle Baby collection!

Flower-Inspired Bright Valentine's Day Tutorial

This look is actually a recreation of a look I created back in the Spring of 2011 inspired by fresh, vibrant flowers that I loved. This incorporates bright flower petal pinks and leaf/stem greens. I changed it a bit here from the original look, but it's similar. Be warned, it is very bright and not necessarily something everyone will feel is wearable for them--I obviously have no inhibitions when it comes to color personally and can go neutral one day and neon the next. If this isn't something you feel comfortable with check back soon as I'll be posting another tute before Valentine's Day. If, however, you say "the brighter the better" or you want to branch out I strongly encourage you to give this a try!

And now on to the tutorial...

Flower Inspired Valentine's Day Full Face Look

I always, always believe that in order for an eye look to be a true success it need to look good both up close as well as from a standing distance (and even further) away!

Quick instructions for face/lip application:

I applied Whip Hand Cosmetics Set the Stage primer to my face and spot corrected a few areas on my face with my Graftobian palette. I contoured my face using MAC Sculpt, applied Make Up For Ever Blush #8 to my cheeks and highlighted with Hourglass Ambient Lighting palette. For my lips I lined and filled with Urban Decay 24/7 lip liner in Ozone then applied MAC Pink Friday and blended MAC Candy Yum-Yum out from the center to create a subtle gradient.

Here's the full face look I created to complement this eye look.

Moody Sisters Organic Skincare Tinted Lip Balm Review - Rose Tinted, Berry Tinted

moody sisters skincare tinted lip balm review

Moody Sisters Organic Skincare Profile

Moody Sisters is a natural skincare line developed and handmade in fresh weekly batches by 2 sisters based in Washington state. Inspired by their own struggles to find the right skin care for their differing needs, they've created a line of products for those suffering from anything from eczema to acne--and everything in between. Their products are natural, toxic chemical-free and paraben-free.

I've reviewed some of their products in the past and recently receive a couple of their tinted lip balms to review.

Price

These retail for $4.95 each

Where to Buy

These tinted lip balms are available through their site HERE

Moody Sister Organic Skincare Rose Tinted Lip Balm Review

moody sisters skincare rose tinted lip balm review

Product Type

This is a tinted lip balm made with natural and organic ingredients.

Shade

In the tube, Rose Tinted is a super deep crimson. On the lips, it is a semi-sheer raisin.

moody sisters skincare rose tinted lip balm review

Scent/Flavor

Mine had a slight scent to it, though I think it was primarily the base ingredients I was smelling. Not at all unpleasant and slightly sweet to the smell. This had no detectable flavor.

Ingredients

Beeswax, Oil Blend (Sweet Almond Oil, Sunflower Oil, Apricot Kernel Oil), Shea Butter, *Coconut Oil, *Cocoa Butter, Vitamin E, Essential Oils (* denotes organic)

On the Lips

This glided on smoothly for the most part, but I did find that tiny bits of the wax in the base transferred onto my lips in little grains. They were easy enough to smooth out and melt into my lips, but it did take a teeny bit of extra effort. These are just as hydrating and comfortable on the lips as the non-tinted lip balms I've tried from Moody Sisters.

Moody Sisters Organic Skincare Berry Tinted Lip Balm Review

moody sisters skincare berry tinted lip balm review

Product Type

Like the Rose Tinted lip balm, this is a tinted lip balm made of organic and natural ingredients.

Shade

This is a incredibly deep blackened maroon in the tube. On the lips it is almost completely sheer with only the slightest hint of barely-there maroon. This also provided a subtle gloss even on my barely pigmented lips.

moody sisters skincare berry tinted lip balm review

Scent/Flavor

I can primarily detect the base ingredients in this along with a slight sweetness. There is no discernible flavor.

Ingredients

Beeswax, Oil Blend (Sweet Almond Oil, Sunflower Oil, Apricot Kernel Oil), Shea Butter, *Coconut Oil, *Cocoa Butter, Vitamin E, Essential Oils (* denotes organic)

 On the Lips

This is as comfortable and hydrating as Rose Tinted. I was surprised by how little color this offered, but it may be a great choice for those that wish to use a natural gloss with very little color!

Where to Buy

These tinted lip balms are available through their site HERE

Final Thoughts

I am a big fan of Moody Sisters in general and I like that they offer tinted lip balms in addition to their regular lip balms. If you're looking for something with a bit more color I'd recommend Rose Tinted, but if you'd prefer a barely-there tint then Berry Tinted is definitely for you. I love how simple and natural the ingredients are in these (along with all of Moody Sisters' products). I definitely recommend checking out what they have to offer!

Are you looking for some fabulous lip care in this cold/dry weather? Have you tried Moody Sisters before?

First Experience with Apollo Trendz - Philosophy Amazing Grace, Benefit The Talent Brush, Clinique Almost Lipstick Review

Apollo Trendz Profile

Apollo Trendz is a new-to-me beauty e-tailer that carries primarily high-end and luxury cosmetics from a variety of brands. I love that they offer free worldwide shipping--you know how I feel about shipping lol. They recently sent me several products to review and share with you.

Note: As of the time of this post 2 of the 3 products sent went out of stock. I was informed that Apollo Trendz goes through a lot of products and inventory move fast so I'm assuming these products may possibly become available again in the future.

Where to Buy

Apollo Trendz's store can be found HERE

Philosophy Amazing Grace Perfume Review

philosphy amazing grace perfume review

Product Type

This is a perfume from Philosophy's Amazing Grace collection. I know this is quite a popular scent among Philosophy lovers.

Scent

Amazing Grace is a musky floral scent. While Philosophy has always described this as having a light musk, I actually find that the musk is as strong as the floral to my nose.

Price

This retails for $16 for .5 fl oz with Philosophy (I was unable to find this on Apollo Trendz site and have contacted them to verify)

Where to Buy

My Thoughts

I have smelled Amazing Grace before. While I typically do not like perfumes with musk in them, I have found I liked this on certain people and I know quite a few people (including several in my family) that love and wear this. I strongly recommend it if you're looking for a slightly more sophisticated, floral musk fragrance.

Clinique Almost Lipstick in Shy Honey Swatch and Review

clinique almost lipstick shy honey swatch and review
Clinique Almost Lipstick in Shy Honey

Product Type

This is a sheer balm-like lipstick with a moderate glossy finish.

Shade

As you can see above color does not really transfer to the lips, however, it does provide a nice semi-glossy effect. I have VERY little pigmentation in my lips so what you see above is the actual shade of my lips naturally.

On the Lips

This was comfortable to wear and applied like a semi-hard balm.

Price

This was listed with a retail price of $15 and a sale price of $10.49 as of the time of this post

Where to Buy

As of the time of this post this is available on Apollo Trendz's site HERE

My Thoughts

If you're the type that prefers a more natural lip this is a great option. It's not extremely glossy so it's a more subtle effect, but still nice. Given that it has virtually no color and it's very slim, this can easily be applied straight from the tube.

Benefit Cosmetics The Talent Brush

benefit cosmetics the talent brush review

Product Type

This is meant to be a multipurpose brush used for liner, shading and contouring. I believe this is an older model Benefit brush as Benefit's brushes now have a blond wood looking handle if memory serves me correctly.

As a Liner Brush

I found this brush worked moderately well as a liner brush. The bristles are a tad long and a bit too flexible to create a super thin line with ease, but I've always been a bigger fan of rounded liner brushes than flat liner brushes. That being said, it will take a tiny bit more care to create a precise line with this brush as the tip tends to flex and splay a bit with gel liner.

As a Shader

I am incredibly confused as to why Benefit would ever recommend using this as a shader, unless you were using a cream shadow. This is a reasonably good small paddle brush in terms of applying cream products, but I wouldn't recommend it for loose or pressed powders. This could also double as a small concealer brush if you were applying a thin layer.

As a Contouring Brush

I'm baffled by this as well. I have never seen a small paddle brush used for contouring. I cannot recommend it for this purpose, but I honestly think brushes are very personal tools so someone out there may find it works beautifully for contouring.

As a Lip Brush

While using this as a lip brush wasn't listed on the packaging, I personally find any decent, firm, small paddle brush can make an okay lip brush. This worked best for sheer lip colors as the flexible ends made creating a super precise perimeter a tad tedious. Something to keep in mind if you want a multipurpose brush and tend to wear sheer colors!

Price

I'm unsure of what the suggested retail price on this is as it's no longer available with Benefit or Sephora and it was out of stock with Apollo Trendz.

Where to Buy

My Thoughts

Depending on what you're looking for this brush may be something you want to pick up, especially if Apollo Trendz lists it at a really good price.

What do you think? Did any of these products spark your interest?

LA Fresh Travel Lite Makeup Remover and Facial Cleansing Wipes Review

Press Sample

LA Fresh Profile

LA Fresh is a beauty company that has created a comprehensive line of personal care and makeup removing wipes for men and women. They've even created special pet wipes!

LA Fresh sent over a couple of their face wipes--makeup removing and facial cleansing wipes--for me to test in their travel lite and individual packets.

LA Travel Lite Fresh Facial Cleansing Wipe Review

la fresh travel lite facial cleansing wipes review
Travel Lite packet contains 8 wipes

la fresh travel lite facial cleansing wipes review
Travel Lite individual packets sold in packs of 3

Product Type

These are oil-free face cleansing wipes meant to condition and cleanse all skin types.

Scent

These have a fresh, slightly floral soap-like scent. The scent is not super strong, but definitely detectable while using the wipes.

On the Face

These cleanse fairly well and even remove most makeup. The cloths are a decent size--not too large, but big enough to get the job done. The 8-cloth packet is super convenient and smaller than a postcard in size, so it can easily be slipped into a handbag or smaller makeup bag. The individual facial cleansing wipes have the same formula, but come in individual packets. These are great if you want to keep 1 or 2 on you during travel or while out and about. I can see either of these being super convenient for being kept in an overnight bag or office desk--as well as your handbag of course!

Price

Both the Travel Lite 8-wipe packet and individual 3-packet set are sold for $2.49

Where to Buy

These are available on LA Fresh's site HERE and HERE

My Thoughts

I think these are great little face cleansing cloths, especially for the price. I found they were gentle enough to be used on my sensitive skin, but these did almost instantly dry out my skin, so I absolutely recommend using a moisturizer after cleansing--especially if you have dry skin.

I did find that all of the LA Fresh wipes I used on my face caused slight reactions with my lips. My lips felt a tad tingly and numb when I used these on them. I have no idea why and couldn't pinpoint what in particular may have been the ingredient(s) causing this reaction. These do contain fragrance, so perhaps that was why? That being said, these are good in terms of cleansing facial skin sand given how sensitive my skin is in general I really can't say whether or not this may be an issue for anyone else. These do not contain parabens according to the ingredients on the packaging.

LA Fresh Travel Lite Makeup Remover Wipes Review

la fresh travel light makeup remover wipes review

la fresh makeup remover wipes review

Product Type

These are makeup removing wipes similar in packaging to the facial cleansing wipes above. It doesn't look as if the 8-pack travel lite pouch of these is available any longer on the site. It has instead been replaced by an oil-free makeup remover wipe formula which I have not tried, but I would assume performs similar to these.

Scent

These have a fresh, slightly licorice-like scent to me.

On the Face

I found these removed makeup pretty well, including waterproof eye makeup. I did find that my lips reacted to these the same way they reacted to the facial cleansing wipes. I was a little disappointed to see that these contained mineral oil (not an issue in the new oil-free formula), which I tend to stay away from as it's a petroleum derivative.  These do contain parabens according to the ingredients label (the new formula appears to be paraben-free).

Price

These are available for $2.49 for a 3-pack of individually wrapped wipes or $19.99 for 48 individually wrapped wipes

Where to Buy

These are available on LA Fresh's site HERE and HERE.

My Thoughts

I'm surprised LA Fresh chose to use mineral oil in these. I personally wouldn't choose to use them, but if you don't mind the use of mineral oil and parabens then these are excellent in terms of removing makeup. I personally cannot recommend using these to remove lipstick, however, given my experience with them causing my lips to react. I would be interested to see how the newer formula works in comparison to this one and you may want to consider purchasing those instead if you're interested in trying these and prefer to avoid mineral oil and/or parabens.

Have you tried LA Fresh makeup remover or facial cleansing wipes? What did you think of them?

Radiant Orchid: Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar Swatches and Dupe Hunt - Lydia, Digitalis

Press Samples

You've likely heard that Pantone has named Radiant Orchid the color of the year for 2014. When this was announced I immediately wondered--what shade is radiant orchid? I have pretty strong color discernment and I admittedly tend to get overly analytical when it comes to colors. Rather than choosing an obvious color like lilac  or buttercup Pantone chose the lovely color radiant orchid. I feel as though this has resulted in some interpretation as I've seen everything from deep magentas to bright lavenders referred to as "radiant orchid" in the last month.

Wanting to really get a better feel for the color I optimistically referred to the formula breakdown, which can be viewed HERE.

As you can see in that link, Radiant Orchid is broken down as follows:

RGB color model

  • Red - 177
  • Green - 99
  • Blue - 163

CMYK color model
  • Cyan - 33
  • Magenta - 72
In the RGB color model the formula reflects almost equal parts red and blue, with almost 25% of the formula being accounted for by Green.

In the CMYK color model the formula reflects just under 70% being composed of magenta and around 30% being accounted for by cyan.

While this wasn't exactly super helpful, based on what I could see with my eye and what I found in these formulas, I concluded that radiant orchid was a form of (possibly) slightly cool toned pinky lavender more or less. But honestly, I think unless you walk around with the Pantone swatch in your pocket it's slightly open to interpretation within a reasonable margin.

Wearing Radiant Orchid Lips

Of course after determining what I thought Radiant Orchid what might be my next step was finding it within my favorite brands. I'll be sharing additional "radiant orchid" posts as the year progresses and I can find or mix what I feel is a reasonable equivalent. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics was one of the first brands I thought of, however, as they have a wealth of unique and primary lip tar colors. Since lip tars are easily mixable (thought obviously you can mix your lipsticks with a little more effort) I thought it might be easiest to start here on my quest to create "radiant orchid" lips. Looking at swatches of OCC's purples, I hand-picked Digitalis and Lydia from the bunch. I thought Lydia might be a close match and if it wasn't I thought it might be a bit closer if mixed with Digitalis. LeCosmetique, a fabulous online pro beauty e-tailer, was kind enough to send them over for me to experiment with and share them with you!

While I personally don't feel that either color on its own or mixed is spot-on, I do think 2 of these options below are reasonable possibilities.

Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar in Digitalis Swatch

obsessive compulsive cosmetics digitalis lip tar swatch

As you can see, OCC Digitalis is a whitened pink-toned lavender. To me, this is almost a whitened version of radiant orchid. Too light to be a match, but possibly close enough to be on a gradient scale with radiant orchid.

Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar in Lydia Swatch

obsessive compulsive cosmetics lydia lip tar swatch

Personally, I think this has a bit too much red in it to be a perfect match for radiant orchid. It's almost got a maroon tone to it and not enough pink. It's also a bit deeper in my opinion, too.

Obsessive Compulsive Cometics Lip Tar Lydia and Digitalis Mixed Swatch

obsessive compulsive cosmetics lydia and digitalis lip tar swatch

This was a mix of about 2 parts Lydia to 1.5 parts Digitalis. I think this is definitely closer than the other two on their own, but I still think it needs to be a bit more vibrant lavender with a bit of light pink. I think this could definitely pass for a near dupe ... but I'd really like to get an exact color match to the swatch.

Final Re-cap

Price

OCC lip tars retail for $18 each (.33 fl oz)

Where to Buy

These are available on LeCosmetique's site as well as through OCC's site

Final Thoughts

I definitely think I can play around and get a color that I feel is a perfect match for radiant orchid. I think adding a more vibrant pink, like a teeny bit of anime, to the mix may really help create that medium pinky lavender. Or perhaps starting with a color such as Hoochie and then mixing in a lighter whitened-pink might be a better fit since Hoochie is probably closer as a base than Lydia in tone. I'm definitely going to play around and come back to you with more possibilities. In the mean time, these are both fantastic colors and I highly recommend both on their own or mixed! I also suggest checking out LeCosmetique's site as they carry a number of fantastic OCC products along with some other brands I love. In fact, I'll be sharing a great pro neutral palette from Graftobian with you that they carry soon!

Have you come across a perfect radiant orchid?

I'll share my thoughts with you on each piece below. LUSH also has several pre-assembled gift boxes in their Valentine's Day collection if you'd prefer not to pick through individual items. My Thoughts

This bath bomb smells amazing, much like the rest of this collection. It is so giant! It's literally around the size of a decent grapefruit, though a bit flatter obviously. I love the design and absolutely cannot wait to crack it open and see what's inside--though I almost don't want to because it's so cute. This is definitely worth nabbing in my opinion.

LUSH Neon Love Soap Review

My Thoughts

I absolutely love LUSH's bar soaps. I think they lather well, have amazing slip and smell so lovely--they often provide a nice scent throughout the whole bathroom when used actually. This is such a cute Valentine's Day soap, it's already gone into one of our bathrooms and I'm sure it'll get just as many compliments as our other LUSH soaps have in the past. If you're a soap fiend like me (I change my soaps out constantly based on the season) this is a must!

LUSH Tender is the Night Massage Bar Review

lush tender is the night massage bar review

Product Type

This is one of two massage bars LUSH released for Valentine's Day. As you can see, mine melted slightly in transit, but it still smells lovely and works fine.

This has a sensuous floral vanilla scent. It's warm and slightly sweet, but not candy-ish. Absolutely beautiful scent.

My Thoughts

It's no secret that LUSH's massage bars are literally some of my favorite products they do. They melt beautifully, provide really long-lasting glide and smell AMAZING. When I saw they released 2 massage bars for Valentine's Day I nearly died. This one is super lovely and it's oval shape makes it very easy to use. I generally find I can get at least 4-5 or more uses from each massage bar when used for full-body massages. The scent is amazing and honestly, I think both are musts!

LUSH Close to You Massage Bar Review

lush close to you massage bar review

Product Type

This is the second massage bar released in this collection. This one is a short cylinder shape and has a white fondant center. This one is meant to be "smooshable" so that you can easily apply it all over your partner's body. My postal guys are really rough on my mail so they gave my box a bit of a bash and sadly this massage bar suffered a bit, but it still smells amazing and works fine.

Scent

I want to bathe in this scent from head to toe every day for the rest of my life! To me, this has a candy-like raspberry frosting type scent. I don't know why I smell raspberry in there, but I do. Apparently it's actually the same scent used in LUSH's Creamy Candy Bubble Bar and Rock Star soap.

Ingredients

Organic Shea Butter (Butyrospermum parkii) ,Murumuru Butter (Astrocaryum murumuru) , Almond Oil (Prunus dulcis) , Olive Oil (Olea europaea) , Organic Agave Syrup (Agave tequilana) , Fragrance , Cupuacu Butter (Theobroma Grandiflorum) , Cornflour (Zea mays) , Glycerine , Methyl Ionone , Fair Trade Vanilla Absolute (Vanilla Planifolia) , Titanium Dioxide , D&C Red No. 27 , D&C Red No. 33 , FD&C Red No. 4

My Thoughts

If you can only get 1 item from this collection, it'd be a hard choice, but I really think this would have to be it! I love the smell and I love LUSH's massage bars. This massage bar is basically a one-way ticket (at least for me) to a fabulous Valentine's Day!

My Thoughts

I think this is a great shower gel if you don't like floral scents, which are often in many Valentine's Day products. LUSH's shower gels always lather really well, which isn't surprising given that they include SLS. If you tend to like citrus scents (especially grapefruit) definitely grab this!

My Thoughts

This smells so yummy! It's smooth and creamy and provides a nice soft glossy effect. I didn't really get any color from this--I took a few pictures but it wasn't detectable--but it's lovely for something subtle that can be thrown on right before a quick Valentine's Day kiss! I absolutely love that it's preservative-free--always my personal preference. This is definitely a must in my opinion!
