New Years Eve Makeup Look Round-Up

I will be doing a best of 2013 post, but it probably won't go up until later this week so sit tight!

This year has been a tough one for me (and my family) and many we know in many ways. I can only hope and pray that 2014 will be filled with nothing but positivity, love and blessings! I know that not everything is within our control, but I'm going to commit to doing everything I can to make 2014 the best I can <3 I look forward to continuing to share my love of makeup with you. Thank you for supporting my blog! xoxo

I posted 2 New Years Eve looks last week, but I wanted to do a quick re-cap for those looking for last-minute inspiration for tonight's festivities.

New Year's Eve Look Inspired by Disney's Frozen

This look is light and frosty and inspired by the adorable Disney movie--Frozen! For the full list of products used in this look check out the original post.

Dark & Smoky New Year's Eve Look #2

This look is darker (but with a pop of fun glitter) for those that want a smoky look for New Year's Eve. For the full list of products and a step-by-step tutorial check out the original post.

So what are you going to wear on New Year's? How are you planning to celebrate?

I'm not doing anything too exciting tonight, just enjoying quiet time with the boys--movies, board games, etc. I managed to get some sort of stomach bug so there will be no leaving the house for me!

Stay healthy and safe and I'll see you in 2014!

Dark and Sultry New Year's Eve Makeup Tutorial Look #2

I did it! I promised you I'd try to get a second look done for New Year's Eve and I did! Good timing too since I'm not doing so hot at the moment--it's gonna be a low-key New Year's for me!

As I mentioned in my first New Year's Eve makeup look inspired by Disney's Frozen, this second look is dark and sultry for those looking for something a bit more dramatic to wear when the ball drops. I wanted to keep it wearable and despite it being a darker look I worked in some Lit Cosmetics glitter to keep it fun and celebration-ready!

I've included pictures of the full look, a step-by-step tutorial and a full product list below!

New Year's Makeup Look #2

As I mentioned, this is a darker, but wearable look! I really prefer softer looks on women's faces, whether the look is dark or light in color scheme. I like blended edges and soft lines and I think this look reflects that. You'll notice in the full face shots that it's harder to see the depth of the shading around my eyes due to the shape of my eyes and face. You can see it a bit better in the picture I posted on instagram this morning as well as in the individual eye shots below.

No editing was done to the photos to alter my complexion aside from cropping and watermarking--Whip Hand Cosmetics Set the Stage Primer and Rouge Bunny Rouge foundation are that good!

New Year's Eve Step by Step Makeup Tutorial

Here's the step-by-step tutorial on how to get this eye look! I've included a condensed overview image then broken the steps down beneath it.

What you'll need:

  • Nars Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base
  • MAC Indian Ink, Carbon, Phloof!
  • Chanel Illusion D'ombre #85
  • Inglot 361, 351
  • Lit Cosmetics clear glitter base
  • Lit Cosmetics Sugar & Spice glitter
  • Make Up For Ever Aqua Eyes pencil in 0L
  • Make Up For Ever Aqua Smoky Lash mascara
  • Inglot brow powder 565 (or whatever suits your brows)
  • Red Cherry Lashes #1

Apply Nars Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base primer to your lid

new year's eve makeup tutorial with lit cosmetics glitter in sugar and spice
"Map" out the crease and outer edge with MAC Indian Ink. This doesn't have to look polished and you don't need to spend a lot of time here, it simply needs to give you an outline of where you intend to deepen the crease.

new year's eve makeup tutorial with chanel illusion d'ombre 85
Apply Chanel Illusion D'ombre #85 to upper lid

new year's eve makeup tutorial with mac indian ink mac carbon and mac phloof
Blend MAC Indian Ink moderately heavily into crease and pull color out a bit. Sweep under outer portion of lower lashline.

new year's eve makeup tutorial with mac indian ink mac carbon and mac phloof
Deepen outer v and deepest part of crease by blending MAC Carbon in. Sweep a tiny bit under outermost portion of lower lashline.

new year's eve makeup tutorial with inglot 361 and 351
Blend Inglot 361 into edges of MAC Indian Ink in crease (this adds some warmth and gives the shading in the crease a more polished appearance). Blend Inglot 351 under brows then pull down and blend into edges of 361.

new year's eve makeup tutorial with make up for ever aqua eyes 0L
Tightline upper lashline and line lower lashline with Make Up For Ever Aqua Eyes 0L.

new year's eve makeup tutorial with mac phloof
Pat MAC Phloof! into inner corner (blending with a light hand when it meets the color on the lid) and pull down slightly below inner lower lashline.

new year's eve makeup tutorial with lit cosmetics glitter in sugar and spice
Working from the inner corner towards the middle of the lid, pat Lit Cosmetics clear glitter base followed by Sugar & Spice glitter onto upper lid. Pat a small amount under inner portion of lower lashline as well. Sugar & Spice should be most concentrated in the inner corner and gradually lessen as you approach the center of the eye.

new year's eve makeup tutorial using red cherry lashes and inglot brow powder 565
Finish the look by applying falsies and filling in your brows. I used Red Cherry #1 here and Inglot brow powder 565.

New Year's Eve Makeup Look Inspired by Disney's Frozen

Affiliate Links

I promised you guys at least 1 New Year's look and I've actually just posted my second one! I'm having a hard time digging up the energy to do a lot right now, but hopefully once my heart meds are all sorted I'll be back to 100%.

We saw Frozen (the animated movie) back on Thanksgiving and I have literally been dreaming about doing a wearable look inspired by the gorgeous color scheme of the movie since! Who doesn't want to be a wintry princess that saves herself?! I am a huge fan of winter colors (New Englander, what can I say?) and I love sparkle for New Year's Eve--all of which worked perfectly with the theme of this look. I had purchased the 2 Lit Cosmetics Kits released at Sephora earlier this holiday season and been dying to use them, so this was the perfect excuse to crack open Tinsel Town.

This look is light and frosty, but my second look is darker and more sultry so you can choose which to use for inspiration depending on your preference--check it out if you prefer something darker for New Year's.

I have shots of both my full face as well as close-up eye shots below. I've also included a full product list in case you want to replicate all or part of this look!

New Year's Eve Makeup Look Inspired by Disney's Frozen

I took these shots using natural winter light (love it), but given all the snow we have it does tend to wash out some of the color. In person the crease was deeper in hue, but given my eye shape it's less easy to see in face shots anyway (my phone was able to better pick up the depth of the crease color in this shot I shared earlier on instagram). You can see it better in individual eye shots below.

I'd like to note that no editing was done to the photos to alter my complexion aside from cropping and watermarking--Whip Hand Cosmetics Set the Stage Primer and Rouge Bunny Rouge foundation are that good!

New Year's Eve Makeup Look Inspired by Disney's Frozen - Up Close Eye Shots

I took closer eye shots both in natural light and artificial to give you an idea of what this eye looked like more accurately. You can see the Lit Cosmetics glitter in these shots really well. I wanted the glitter to give the look a sparkly frozen effect working its way across the eye from the inner corner out. It's noticeable in person, but my camera had a harder time catching it in the full face shots above--you can see it better below.

Homemade Guinness Truffles (21 Plus Only)

This gift suggestion is only recommended for those 21 and over. While the Hubs and I aren't big drinkers, he's a fan of Guinness (shocking given that he's Irish) and I love alcohol-infused chocolate (in all fairness I love just about all chocolate!). This recipe comes directly from Guinness and is supposed to be amazing! If my youngest gets well soon I plan to make them for Christmas! Prices will vary based on ingredients used, but given how few ingredients there are, it should be a pretty budget-friendly and delicious project!

Ingredients

Makes 25 Truffles
  • 1 kg dark chocolate in small chunks
  • 400ml cream
  • 100ml GUINNESS®
  • Zest of 1 Orange
  • Cocoa or coconut powder

Stocking Stuffer: MAC Heroine Lipstick (permanent)

You've probably already seen the news everywhere, but MAC Heroine lipstick is now a permanent part of MAC's lipstick range. I was fortunate to already own it, but I know quite a few MAC fans have been hunting for it so it could make a fantastic stocking stuffer! If the person you're buying for already owns Heroine, you can check out the other MAC (and other brand) lipstick swatches indexed on the blog! I'm still working on updating the list, but there's a decent variety for now.

Old Navy Men's Flannel PJ Pants

In over 8 years of marriage if there is one thing I've learned to be true it's--never underestimate the power of a good pair of flannel pajama pants for your partner! Our family is a pajama-loving family and the Hubs is no exception. He absolutely loves a good pair of flannel pj bottoms. Every year I purchase Old Navy flannel pj bottoms for him and every year they're a hit! I highly recommend them! I also always give the little guys pj's as well and Old Navy and Gap has some super cute stuff as always (mine are getting these and these).

Price

Stocking Stuffer: Sugarpill Cosmetics

You guys know I love Sugarpill! I strongly suggest grabbing a chromalust loose shadow or 2 to put in some stockings. So pretty! I believe my Pink Weekend sale order should arrive today and a few people on my list just might be getting some Sugarpill for Christmas ;) Sugarpill recently announced that some of their sold out items are now back in stock and that orders should be placed ASAP (by 1pm PST on 12/20) to make it in time for Christmas--hopefully. I did a post on my top 5 Sugarpill shadows for Pink Weekend, but though it might be helpful to those new to Sugarpill and hoping to buy for Christmas as well!

Price

Prices vary based on the product, but loose shadows are $12 (with the exception of the neon which are $16), pressed shadows are $12 and palettes are $34!

Crown Brush HD Brush Set in Orange Review

crown brush hd brush set review

Product Type

This is a synthetic brush set meant for HD makeup in liquid, cream and powder forms according to Crown Brush. It comes in a zip-up case with a mirror inside and a pair of tweezers.

In this Set

This set includes the following brushes (from what I can tell):
  • large powder brush
  • small powder brush
  • small round brush
  • fluffy shadow brush
  • fluffy blending brush
  • detail and/or liner brush

My Thoughts on the brushes

All of the brushes have fairly long handles (I'm not a fan of travel handles, but these don't feel super short) and the larger brushes have decent weight to them. I'm going to share my opinions on each of the brushes and their possible uses:

1. Large Powder Brush - This seems like a decent all-over powder brush. It's soft and fairly fluffy (not very densely packed), so it would be best for brushing a lighter application of powder across the entire face in my opinion.

2. Small Powder Brush - This is also a very soft brush. It is pretty densely packed and has moderately short bristles, so it would most likely work for contouring or even blush application (though I'd use a light hand and build gradually).

3. Small Round Brush - This is a fairly densely packed round brush with medium length bristles. It could work well for contouring slightly smaller areas.

4. Shadow Brush - This is a fairly stiff and fluffy shadow brush. It's a tiny bit more fluffy than I like in a paddle brush and more stiff than I prefer in a fluffy shadow brush. Perhaps after playing around with it a bit I could grow to like it a bit, but upon first impression I'm not a fan.

5. Fluffy Blender - This blender is super loosely packed and pretty fluffy. I actually prefer my blenders a bit more densely packed as I feel this is a bit too fluffy to work the way I want it to.

6. Liner/Detailer Brush - This brush has me scratching my head. It's not narrow enough and it's too fluffy in my opinion to be a good liner brush and the tip is blunt and rounded without a fine point. I'm just not sure what I'd do with this brush.

Final Re-cap

Price

This set has a suggested retail price of $69.99 with a sale price on Crown Brush's site of $27.95

Where to Buy

This set is available through Crown Brush's site

Final Thoughts

I think this brush set has 3 fairly decent face brushes and 3 really mediocre eye brushes. For a makeup newbie this could be either a step up from existing brushes or slightly confusing as a set given the 3 eye brushes. If you're experienced enough you could likely make all of these brushes work for you, but it will probably be more laborious than you'd want. I would have liked to see a large flat paddle brush for foundation, finer liner brush, small fluffy or paddle shadow brush and better blender in this set in addition to the 3 existing face brushes if it's meant to be "all-encompassing". The tweezers are decent. The mirror is not useful and keeps slipping out of its built-in sleeve.

I wouldn't recommend this set for a more experienced individual, but it could potentially appeal to a young makeup lover--though I honestly believe in starting with the best from the get-go. I do love how soft the bristles are and I think the white and blue version of this set is pretty to look at. I think buyers should take these things into consideration then judge for themselves if this set is a good investment for their needs/wants.

What do you think?

Note: Products in this post were provided by iFabbo. All opinions stated above are my own based on my personal experience and have not been influenced by iFabbo or Crown Brush.

Korres Ultra Hydrating Body Butter Trio Set

I've been having a major love affair with Korres for some time. Their products are amazing! You may remember I recently featured Korres' Greek Yoghurt Advanced Nourishing Sleeping Facial--which is still a part of my skincare routine on a nightly basis. Korres knows how to do moisturizers and their body butters are perfect examples. They're free of so many of the ingredients I tend to avoid, their texture is creamy and silky (but not greasy), they hydrate amazingly and they smell like heaven--seriously! Korres' Ultra Hydrating Body Butter Trio Set offers great products at an amazing value and I think anyone would really enjoy receiving it.

In this Set

This set includes the following:
  • Vanilla Guava Body Butter 235ml
  • Apple Blossom Body Butter 235ml
  • Fig Body Butter 235ml
  • Wild Rose + Vitamin C Advanced Brightening Sleeping Facial mini

I can tell you from personal experience that the scents in these body butters are amazing and I've heard good things about the Wild Rose + Vitamin C Advanced Brightening Sleeping Facial, though I haven't personally tried it yet--I need to!

Price

This set retails for $42 (which is amazing given that 1 body butter tube normally retail for $29)

Baxter of California Bravado 2

This is one of the scents that the Hubs tried back in 2011 and we both instantly fell in love with it. It is amazing smelling! Seriously, if you like citrus, refined scents for men ... oh my gosh this is it! The Hubs and I are both picky when it comes to fragrances and we both give it 2 thumbs up. If your male significant other or you want a new cologne--try this!

Did you guy really think I could publish a gift guide without featuring this set? Course not! I absolutely love the mini sets OCC released exclusively at Sephora this year. I swatched and reviewed this set in a past post and immediately went out and purchased the 12 piece set after. The 4 piece set has a perfect mix of shades and I think this would make an amazing stocking stuffer for any lip junkie!
